Can I water my garden during a hosepipe ban in Essex?
Yes! Water companies ban the use of a hosepipe, but most of them allow you to fill a watering can and use that. You should check your water provider’s website though as they each have different rules.
Other considerations given the increasing number of hosepipe bans we experience are how to prevent needing a hosepipe for watering in the first place. Below are our top tips:
Drought tolerant plants - we have another blog post on this topic. Our climate is changing, and we need to adapt the planting we use in our gardens as a result. Using drought tolerant plants will avoid you needing to water as much as you otherwise would.
Mulching - adding a layer of mulch (bark, compost, etc) to the top of the soil helps the soil to retain moisture which really makes a big difference. It also adds nutrients which gives you healthier plants.
Ground cover plants - these also cover the soil helping it to remain cooler and retain moisture. Plants like pachysandra, periwinkle or erigeron are great for this. They also help suppress weeds which is an added bonus!
