Enhance your soil to enhance your garden

An often overlooked yet critical element of gardening is soil enhancement. This is a great shame as a) it is such a simple task and b) it vastly improves how your garden looks.

So, what is soil enhancement? Well, put simply, it is improving the quality of your soil by adding nutrients to it. This then gives your planting the food it requires to have a healthy life. All that is needed is to spread organic matter on top of the soil, and then it takes care of itself, gradually working its way into the soil. This is called ‘mulching’. Organic matter such as compost, tree bark or manure are perfect for this. Tree bark is particularly good as it has the added bonus of reducing weeds popping through.

In Southend and Essex, garden designers, landscapers and gardeners in general have the challenge of mostly having dense clay soil. This is challenging for plants to thrive, so mulching is all the more important in these areas.

The best time of year to mulch is early Spring, around March, to give new growth a kick start with a good source of nutrients. Mulching again around November or before frosts arrive is also advised as mulch has the added benefit of frost protection.

So take the short amount of time to spread some mulch and notice the difference in how much more lush your garden will grow.
