Drought tolerant plants to use in Southend

Did you know that Southend-on-Sea in Essex is one of the driest parts of the UK? On top of this, global warming is having a real impact resulting in much drier and hotter summers, impacting our gardens.

So, what are the go-to drought tolerant plants to use? Well, there are many thankfully, too many to list. But to give you some inspiration, choosing reliables like lavender and salvia are a great choice, with the added bonus being they are strongly scented. Grasses like stipa tenuissima are great too, and give winter interest as they dance in the wind.

A garden we designed in Leigh-on-Sea recently was almost entirely in sun all day, so we used very drought tolerant plants such as evergreen euphorbia, erigeron, verbena and achillea which I recommend looking into using if you have similar conditions.

It is also worth considering design choices to help mitigate the impact of drought on our gardens. For example, raised beds and pots dry out super quickly, so consider planting direct in the ground instead. This will also cost less money. Spreading mulch such as bark chippings in spring helps suppress weeds but it also helps the ground to retain moisture. And using ground cover plants like erigeron, pachysandra or vinca also helps to keep the soil cool as these plants crawl along the surface shading the top layer of soil.
